“Make new friends, but keep the old”

If you were ever a Girl Scout, you have finished the line by now: “...one is silver and the other gold.” This friendship adage is true for major capital campaigns. Even while you are communicating with potential major donors, remember to elevate your conversation with existing donors, too.

Here are a few ways to show the love to your annual donors during a campaign, when the spotlight is focused on major gifts:

  • Establish giving societies if you don’t already have them. Incentivize donors to step up their support by inviting them to a new gift level, to extend a giving streak, or to add you to their estate plans.
  • Refresh the look and feel of your giving societies, if they have been around for a while. Modernize their visuals to give them more punch and presence. Leverage the excitement and energy generated by the campaign to re-capture attention for this type of steadfast giving.
  • Create ways to celebrate annual donors. Ask them to stand at in-person events. List them on your website and draw attention to the list. Give them a unique bumper sticker or car magnet. Invite them to sit in a special section (marked with a banner) during sporting events.
